Videos and bicycles

I'm having a thing for videos at the moment.

Right now I'm loving this Louis Vuitton ad.

It reminds me of the Free People January catalogue shot in Amsterdam, featuring models and members of the public on/with bicycles.

Clearly cycling around in European capitals with a chic satchel bag is the thing to do this upcoming spring. A trend I'd happily follow.

Grey days and magical treats

I hate this greyness that follows Christmas and precedes spring. It's dark, wet, cold. Thoroughly miserable. Life is done on routine. Summer and fun feels miles away. Last night I was so depressed by the whole thing that I finished work, took a shower and went to bed. We're talking 5 pm here.

It's nice having days like that but the rest of the time...well, for me it's all about trying to feel inspired. Inspired to do whatever, just not go to bed. I think it's so important to have little things to look forward to all the time, but also little treats in everyday life. E.g. a bath, a creamy cappuccino, an episode of your favorite show before bedtime. You get the gist.

Right now, the spring couture collections are that magical treat for me. When I feel like going into hibernation until April browsing pictures and watching videos do the job of dispersing those thoughts and leave me planning spring themed DIYs.

And how beautiful and inspirational is this video?

DIY: "the white sack"

I'm a sucker for great natural materials. Present me with second hand 100% cotton/silk/wool/leather/etc and polyester designer stuff and you can bet I'll choose the former.  So throughout spring last year I lived in the below COS cotton sweatshirt paired with skinny jeans. (It was originally a dress length sweatshirt, but I cropped it ages ago.)

But when my boyfriend started referring to my much loved sweatshirt as "the white sack" it stuck in my head and it didn't take long before I too shared this view and started feeling like a bag of potatoes every time I wore it. So I decided it needs altering.

But then came summer and skirts, dresses and sandals became a priority. Then autumn where white felt totally irrelevant. So the poor sweatshirt got forgotten about. But! Now we are approaching spring again and the current trends left me buzzing with inspiration of what to do with it.

In the end I decided to combine two trends, namely the graphic black/white and the leather, and made a cardigan with leather details. Easy peasy! See below for steps.

  1. White top
  2. (Faux) Leather - I butchered an old mini skirt that's been collecting dust in my wardrobe
  3. Scissors
  4. Sewing machine/Needle & thread/Textile glue

  1. Cut open down the middle of the front.
  2. Cut out two squares form the faux leather and attach one on each side using your method of choice, sewing or textile glue.
  3. I wanted a blazer style look so folded out the top of the sides in a diagonal line and sewed in place.

And that's that. From no longer loved to new favourite. Isn't crafting just magical?

Inspiration: two tone denim

I am one of those girls who lives in jeans. Love, love, love denim.

So Miu Miu's SS13 show, with loooads of denim grabbed my eye and I have been thinking about how to incorporate more denim luxe into my style for a bit of variation to the endless jeans casual.

I've been doing a mental inventory of the denim items I have, and noticed I own a lot of denim mini skirts. A lot. From my teenage days and not worn much since.

When I saw this picture at the Sartorialist all the bits felt into place and the answer to the musings became obvious: two tone DIY denim skirt, fitted wool coat, simple heels and an endless luxurious scarf. Rosy cheeks from the cold as main accessory.

The skirt would be the easiest thing to DIY. Cut off the bottom of a dark and a light skirt. Sew the bottom of the dark onto the top of the light and vice versa. Done!

I think it's time to start digging out the denim skirts from the bottom of my wardrobe.

Inspiration: ruffles

Lovelovelove the ruffles this season. What a fantastic way to create a romantic or dramatic look! And it feels like the most summery style. Clearly I need to have a go at DIYing this! Stay tuned!

Inspiration: tassels

Soft furnishings entered the runways this season, in the form of tassels worn as necklaces at Saint Laurent (btw, what do you think of the name change?). A look embraced by Kate Moss, and she looks fantastic in it...although, is there anything that woman doesn't look fantastic in?

This couldn't be easier to DIY. Step 1. Get a black curtain tassel. Step 2. Wear it around your neck, ideally over a sheer blouse. Done.

Enjoy the tassel shopping and have a great week everybody!
